Christmas Lights

Christmas Lights[d]

These are a fast, easy knit - it took me about 45 minutes to do each of them at a slow, TV-watching pace. They're a great way to use up scrap yarn and make fast holiday stocking stuffers. String them together on plain yarn, iCord, ribbon, etc., or leave them as individual bulbs for infant toys (DO NOT give strung bulbs to a small child as they would be a significant strangulation hazard!). Fill one with catnip for a fast holiday feline treat. You could also put small bells or squeakers in, if you desired.

Yarn: any worsted weight in colours desired (photo shows Red Heart Supersaver and Caron One Pounder)

Needles: US 3 double-pointed (see my double-pointed needle tutorial to learn how they work)

Cast on 3 sts, one on each needle (if this is too fiddly for novice DPN users, you can skip to the 2 2 2 row below but you'll have a more egg-shaped light)
Place marker to indicate beginning of rounds, if desired.
Knit 1 rnd.
Inc1 in all sts (2 2 2)
Knit 2 rnds.
Inc1 in all sts (4 4 4)
Knit 2 rnds.
Inc1, K1; repeat around. (6 6 6)
Knit 3 rnds.
Inc1, K2; repeat around. (8 8 8)
Knit 8 rnds.
SSK, K4, K2tog; repeat around. (6 6 6)
SSK, K2, K2tog; repeat around. (4 4 4)
Change to plug colour (dark green in photo)
Knit 5 rnds.
K2tog around. (2 2 2)

Stuff with polyfil, being sure to put just a small amount in the tip first so it holds a small point (if you just jam in a big ball, it'll all puff out and look more egg- like).

Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches tight.
