Yarn: Bernat CottonTots 100% cotton yarn
Needles: US 5
Pattern: cast on 150. For bottom/top border, work six rows in stockinette stitch (or seed stitch if you don't want it to curl; I didn't know about st-st curling when I created the pattern). Then to make one row of the woven look, knit five stitches of stockinette border, then do fourteen squares by alternating knit or purl every 10 stitches, reversing as per stockinette stitch on the reverse side. After 16 rows, alternate to form the next "woven" row. I made mine with 20 "woven" rows, which required 5 balls of the yarn, but you could do more or less as desired (mine came out as 33in/83cm wide, 42in/106cm long). Finish with a top border as the bottom.
I have also made a larger, adult-sized throw using this basic pattern, altered as follows:
Yarn: Lily Sugar and Cream 100% cotton yarn in Sage Green, approximately 25 balls
Needles: US 5 circular needle with a 30" cable
As above with the following changes: cast on 230, work 8 rows of seed stitch for the bottom border, then work the basketweave pattern as above with 22 squares per basketweave row and a 5-stitch border in seed stitch on either side. Work 31 basketweave rows, then finish with another 8-row seed stitch top border.
For photos of this version (which also includes some simple intarsia initials and the year worked into the pattern, working those squares all as a right-side st-st stitch even if the basketweave pattern would have had them reversed), see Vana's Blanket in the gallery. I hand-charted the letters and numbers, but won't be posting them since they were simple to work out and it's unlikely anyone would want to use those exact letters and numbers. If you do want to work in some letters and numbers, just chart them out on graph paper, ensuring that in the 10 sts x 16 rows block you leave at least one stitch of border around the number/letter. This means your letter/number will actually be no more than 8 sts wide and 14 rows tall.
