Yarn: Red Heart TLC Essentials in Lt. Celery, Red Heart Super Saver in dark green and cornmeal
Needles: US 3 double-pointed (see my double-pointed needle tutorial to learn how they work)
This was my submission for the Caps the Capital charity event.
The flower pattern is by Jessica Tromp with only one blank line between the flowers instead of three as shown on the original pattern on her baby charts page.
Cast on 64 stitches in main colour. Work a K1 P1 rib pattern for two inches. Knit one row around in main colour. Using the stranded technique, begin flower pattern, twisting any feeder yarn every few stitches for a nice, flat interior. After the flower pattern, continue knitting with main colour until the st-st portion is two inches. K2tog all around (32 sts). Knit around one row. K2tog all around (16 sts). Knit around one row. K2tog all around (8 sts). Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Pull tight and tie off, weaving end on inside of hat. Weave all other ends inside as well for a neat finish.
NOTE: after re-checking the guidelines for the size of hats they wanted, I found that this one was slightly too big (third-world babies tend to have smaller heads than first-world ones). So I made a second one with 8 stitches (one flower's worth) less and it fits the size guidelines. I submitted both.
