I'm not going to make a huge list of all the music I like, because these days on the Internet, that's repetitive and pointless. Instead, I'm going to list here some of the artists and bands that are ignored by mainstream radio, or are from outside the US and thus get lumped into a catch-all "foreign" category.
Great Big Sea's music ranges from catchy fun favourites like "When I'm Up (I Can't Get Down)" and "The Night Pat Murphy Died" to sorrowful, moving dirges like "Recruiting Sargeant" and "General Taylor." Many of this maritime group's songs are traditional sea and fishing songs, usually dressed up in the group's romping style. Several songs take on a hilarious bend when the group's exuberance is combined with witty lyrics.
Even if you've never seen the ocean, if you like folk or fun or both, this group is definitely worth looking into. I recommend starting with Play, which features a good mix of their own stuff and the traditional tunes. Please note that there is some repetition between some albums, some because they are live versions, and some because certain albums were released in the US while others were not.
More to come another day!
