A quick "cake" made as a divisional entry for the That Takes the Cake! Sugar Arts Show and Competition, Austin TX. It was made between midnight and 3 am the day before the show and not what I originally intended to make to illustrate this technique I've been experimenting with, but time got so short that I just had to be happy with something fast. The Jolly Rancher candies were melted in the microwave, pressed flat, torched, then cut. When cool, the excess broke off and the pieces were arranged on a simple fondant base and piped into place. The fondant base was deliberatley made small to allow for overhang, but the judges thought it was too small. It didn't place, which wasn't surprising. I hope to do more with this technique in the future and may teach it at future Capital Confectioners event.
