Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver in Petal Pink, White, Caron Perfect Match in Espresso, other colourful scraps of yarn.
Needles: US size 3 double pointed needles (see my double-pointed needle tutorial to learn how they work)
M1: when instructed to M1 (make one), lift the purl bump from the previous row onto the left hand needle. Do not use the back bar as in a standard M1 or you will leave a small hole. See the following photos:

Break yarn and sew through remaining sts.
To better define the edge between the cake and the cup, sew through the cup's top edge with yarn matching the cup colour. Pass the needle under the knit stitches and over the purled stitches as shown in the photo below. Pull snug but not overly tight, and this will cause the rippled edge of the cup to become more defined and make the cake portion pop out more.
The icing can be left off (see the gallery for a photo of what it looks like without the icing), done in your own freeform way, or you can follow this pattern to duplicate the photo.

Position icing as desired on cupcake, pin in place ensuring that it sits flat, and stitch all around the edge with matching thread.
For sprinkles, use scraps of coloured yarn to sew in and out randomly all over the icing. Space some stitches out and make others cross. Do not pull stitches too tight or they will pucker the surface.
