"Blue Fuzzy Monster Who Likes Baked Goods" Hat

Blue Fuzzy Monster Who Likes Baked Goods Hat[d]

See the gallery for more photos.

Note that this hat was designed to look like a certain "Blue Fuzzy Monster Who Likes Baked Goods" (although the eyes are too far apart), but it could be easily adapted to be other muppets or animals. For instance, red yarn could be substituted and the eyes made the same way to look like "Small Red Fuzzy Monster Who Is Notoriously Mass-Marketed", or two shades of brown eyelash yarn could be used with a light base to look more like animal fur, and then ears could be added at the sides. It could also be left without embellishments to be a furry hat in and of itself (please see the gallery for photos of what it looks like without the eyeballs).

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver in Royal Blue and two balls of dark blue eyelash novelty yarn, plus Red Heart Super Saver in White

Also needed: Black felt for eyes

Needles: US size 10.5 circular needle with a 14" cord (plus 10.5 double-pointed needles for closing at the top), plus size 3 double pointed needles (see my double-pointed needle tutorial to learn how they work) for the eyes.

Size: Gauge is difficult to calculate because combing the Fun Fur out affects the overall gauge, plus it's really hard to count the stitches with all of the fuzz. However, the pattern as written results in a 21" circumference when knit with medium-to-loose tension (it is actually quite difficult to knit the three strands tightly).

For the entire hat, knit with one strand of the Red Heart and TWO strands of the eyelash yarn (I recommend using two balls at once), all held together for every stitch. You will be knitting the hat inside-out, since most of the fur will tend to show up on the reverse side.

Cast 50 sts on the larger needles. Place marker if desired.

Turn hat inside out to reveal the furry side. Use a fine-toothed comb to gently and slowly pull as much of the Fun Fur up as possible.

Make two.

Cast 3 sts on the smaller needles, one on each needle (1 1 1) and place marker if desired.

Break yarn and pull through remaining 6 sts.

Measure out and cut two 3/4" circles for the pupils of the eyes. Sew them on off-centre. Attach the eyes to the hat using some of the Royal Blue Red Heart yarn (for Cookie Monster, be sure to make the eyes pointing in different directions for that crazy, spinning-eye look).
