I can't listen to lyrical music while I write because I find it too distracting. However, there are several songs that, when I listen to them, invoke feelings that match certain scenes from Sorrows of Adoration.
Here's a sampling of the kind of music that really goes well with this book, along with the matching scenes (definite spoilers below!).
|Song Title||Artist/Group||Related Scene|
|Truly Madly Deeply||Savage Garden||This song was big when I was writing the book, and it struck me as perfect for the theme song for the whole book. Kurit and Aenna first kiss while standing on a mountain, and Aenna and Jarik first succumb to their love after bathing in a lake by the cottage. There are many moments in the book when lovers are laying together, wishing that they could do so forever.|
|Annie's Song||John Denver||Another classic love song. This happy ode to love is just how Kurit and Aenna felt about each other before it started to go all wrong.|
|Something So Strong||Crowded House||This song fits the overall theme of love not being easy. The opening lines "Love can make you weep, Can make you run for cover" pretty much sums up the whole problem.|
|You're the Inspiration||Chicago||This is just one of those general love songs that always comes to mind when I think about characters who are falling for each other. Aenna is definitely an inspiration to Kurit and Jarik, and they to her. The whole story is inspired by Aenna's love and sorrow for Jarik.|
|Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word||Elton John||When Kurit is suffering his guilt over Aenna's abduction, he feels that everything is slipping away from him, but he can't talk to her about it. He knows in his heart that he's hurting her, but he can't seem to just get it out of his system. This agony is well captured in the words of this song.|
|What a Good Boy||Barenaked Ladies|
Although this song has clearly modern references, the overall theme of a guy knowing he isn't doing right by the woman he loves matches Kurit in the later chapters. The lines "I wake up scared, I wake up strange. I wake up wondering if anything in my life is ever going to change. I wake up scared, I wake up strange, And everything around me stays the same" really fits how Kurit feels when he feels like he let Aenna down by not rescuing her. He drinks to numb the pain, but still wakes up shaken to the core by the abduction and all that has gone wrong since.
He also is aware that he's screwing up, but he can't open up to Aenna and get past it, which is like the lines "I couldn't tell you that I was wrong" and "I couldn't tell you that you were right." Instead of watching TV and laying awake all night, Kurit gets drunk and tries to forget.
Also, the lines "We've got these chains that hang around our necks, People want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath" invokes the frustration of people trying to thwart a relationship, as Kasha and Sashken did to Aenna and Kurit.
|Return to Innocence||Enigma||This could be Aenna's theme song. It's all about finding inner strength as the world tries to tear you down. She doesn't always succeed, but she eventually works through her problems to return to herself.|
|I Don't Want To Miss A Thing||Aerosmith|
This is the perfect song to describe how Jarik feels when he's caring for Aenna at the cottage, after Kurit struck her. He even says, "I shall never again have the opportunity to hold you as you sleep. I could not bear to waste a single moment of that time on my own slumber. You were so beautiful and at peace - I wanted to paint a portrait of you like that in my mind, and so I just looked at you all night."
That's quite similar to the sentiment from the song that goes "Don't wanna close my eyes , Don't wanna fall asleep, 'Cause I'd miss you, baby, And I don't wanna miss a thing." The whole song really captures Jarik's longing adoration for Aenna at that time.
|Together Alone||Crowded House||This song captures how Aenna feels as she deals with Jarik's death. "We were as close as anyone can be. Now you are gone far away from me." She still feels that he is with her even when she is aware that he is gone.|
|Dante's Prayer||Loreena Mckennitt||I imagine Jarik singing this song to Aenna from beyond the grave. Her love was a treasure to him even though it came with much sorrow. "Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears. We'll rise above these earthly cares. Cast your eyes on the ocean, Cast your soul to the sea. When the dark night seems endless Please remember me." He would wish her to remember him when she needs his comfort.|
When actually writing the book, I mostly listened to the soundtrack for Ever After. I like having instrumental music on in the background, and this CD was just right for most of my writing moods.
For those who have read the book and enjoyed it, here are some pages with extra information. These pages contain possible spoilers! Don't look unless you're okay with that or have already read the book!
